MIAMI NEXT FOR BECKS?

Miami could be set for their first top division football club after it has emerged that England star David Beckham has chosen this city as the location for his new MLS franchise. Beckham was given the option to start a new MLS franchise when he signed a contract with LA Galaxy in 2007.

It was agreed that Beckham will be given this option when he decided to retire from football. Even though many have thought that Beckham would fit into football management, the 38-year-old has always spoken about becoming a football club owner.

The former England star recently announced his retirement from playing football after having represented several big clubs across the world like Manchester United, AC Milan and Real Madrid. He has also played for PSG and LA Galaxy as well. Beckham is one of the richest football players in the world, as he is worth more than £ 150 million. He was one of the top earners even during his playing days, while he also commanded a lot of respect in the sponsorship arena.
Even after his retirement, Beckham pocketed a cool £ 15 million last year from sponsorship deals. Setting up an MLS franchise would need Beckham to come up with almost £ 25 million, which is unlikely to pose a big problem.

“We are continuing our discussions with David Beckham regarding future ownership of an MLS expansion team. Our policy regarding discussions with potential expansion team owners is that we keep those conversations private until the individuals we are speaking with decide they want to go public with their plans. Thus, it is more appropriate for David Beckham to comment on his plans,” said Dan Courtemanche, a spokesman for MLS. Officials from Miami has said that they have not held discussions with Beckham so far, but a deal could be announced soon.
